By getting started during Be An Author Month, you can tap into the excitement of this special event and create engaging, high-quality writing experiences for your students.

Student Writing Competition
The theme of this year’s Be An Author Month is “Tell Your Story.” The goal is to empower students to explore their unique perspectives and share their voices with the world. As part of the student writing competition, kids can submit their original stories for a chance to be featured in a published collection of narratives.
Book Creator’s “Tell Your Story” competition runs from March 5th to April 5th and includes three categories:
- Elementary (ages 5-9)
- Middle (ages 10-13)
- High (ages 14-18)
A winner will be selected from each category by the Book Creator team. And there’s even a competition rubric available to guide students as they craft their submissions. You can find all the details on the Be An Author Month landing page including some of the special prizes for winners. Do you like the idea of a student writing competition? This might even inspire you to try one out in your school or district, too!

Tell Your Story Competition Resources
One of the things I love about Book Creator is how every student can choose the best way to tell their story. Whether they type out sentences, use voice-to-text, or fill their pages with audio and video clips, the possibilities are endless! Students can add images, icons, and shapes, or even create a comic book—turning their stories into interactive, shareable ebooks.
For Be An Author Month and the “Tell Your Story” student writing competition, Book Creator has put together a fantastic collection of resources for teachers and students. These include:
- A teacher guidebook to help you make the most of the student writing competition
- Student workbooks and templates for both K-5 and 6-12
- Remixable books you can customize for your classroom
You can use these resources for inspiration or share them directly with students—it’s completely up to you!
Be An Author Month Webinars
I love virtual professional development, especially when it’s free for teachers! As part of Be An Author Month, Book Creator is hosting a lineup of live webinars (with replays available) featuring expert-led demonstrations and creative storytelling ideas.
This year’s lineup includes webinars with:
- WeWillWrite
- MagicSchool
- Class Companion
These sessions are designed to support literacy and storytelling. So they are the perfect for educators looking to bring more writing into the classroom. Even if you’re not using these complementary tools it will certainly give you ideas to consider.
In addition to teacher-focused webinars, Book Creator is also hosting a special student webinar featuring author Jill Esbaum! Students will get an inside look at her writing journey and have a chance to ask questions about storytelling and publishing.
